Edible Bodies at Glasshouse

Heather Sincavage, Sergey Jivetin, Birgit Larson

May 13, 2023 5-7p

An outdoor happening which considers the edible as a process with multiple pasts that co-exist in the present. Food is a relational actant. It manifests a temporary otherness- once swallowed its coherence gradually dissipates until it completely absorbs in the body. Once dissolved it becomes our cells. The edible gets assimilated into us. It has a formative power which acts on the body. It’s a process that performs much longer than the act (of eating). For most of us, it is a daily “happening”. A repeated ordinary act. The edible as a truly immersive, relational, durational performance of an other is the focus of this performance happening.

On Saturday, May 13th, 5-7pm, Glasshouse in New Paltz will host an outdoor event dedicated to the performative experience of food and eating.

This event is part of our 16th season, titled: 'Present Continuous'

Each performance will be durational, ongoing for 2 hours, repeated within this timeframe as needed.

RSVP and Bring a plant to add to our growing community soup garden!

Thank you to our fabulous sponsors at Coppersea Distilling for bringing beverages to our events this season!

Artist’s Bios-

Sergey Jivetin- With an extensive background in metalsmithing, jewelry design, and engineering, Sergey Jivetin uses the skill set of a master craftsman to transform ordinary materials into potent conveyors of meaning. His practice introduces miniature elements into unexpected settings to examine humanity's convoluted relationship with nature. The disappearance of the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan, one of the greatest ecological disasters of the 20th century, heightened Jivetin's sensitivity to the preciousness of natural resources and their management. Since relocating to the United States in 1994, his practice has expanded from wearable jewelry pieces to experimental flatware, scientific and medical apparatus, sculptural objects, and site-specific installations. He received numerous accolades including fellowships from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, Peter S. Reed Foundation, and New York Foundation for the Arts. Jivetin’s work is in the permanent collections of many public and private entities, such as the Smithsonian Institution, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Art and Design, and Dallas Museum of Art. website: https://www.sergeyjivetin.com/

Birgit Larson- Inspired by productivity culture, anxiety and mundanity, Birgit uses performance and drawing to understand and create new modes for the maintenance of (her) life. Previously she has inhabited the ghost of her husband’s ex-fiance and organized 24-hour friendships with strangers. She is most recently constructing an emotional schedule within the framework of a perfect, repeated day. In 2020 she performed for Performance Mix Festival with the New Dance Alliance (NYC). She holds her MFA from Transart Institute for Creative Research. She has lived in Beacon, NY since 2014 with her husband and now 1 year old Beryl. website: www.birgitlarson.com

Heather Sincavage is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in performance art but also includes drawing, sculpture, and installation. She uses lived experiences with violence and trauma as case studies in her work.

Her work has appeared in the Tate Modern in London and LiteHaus Galerie in Berlin amongst other locations across Europe. She has performed at the Queens Museum and Grace Exhibition Space in NYC; Tempting Failure Festival of Performance Art & Noise in London, Alive at Satellite during Miami Art Basel; Latvian Center for Performance Art in Riga; and galleries across the United States. Additionally, her work has been projected on the historic Daniels and Fisher historic bell tower in downtown Denver, Co. She has exhibited in over 40 solo and group exhibitions across the United States and in Germany, Sweden, Spain, Finland, and Iceland. website: www.heathersincavage.com/
