Glasshouse Project and Rosendale Theatre present ‘The Persona Works of Linda Mary Montano’, a screening of short videos and conversation dedicated to the artist’s persona performances and life works.
Linda Mary Montano (b. 1942, Saugerties, NY) is a performance artist and a “Living Sculpture.” A pioneer figure in contemporary performance art, her work since the mid 1960s has been critical in the development of video and performance. With a seminal body of work spanning six decades, Montano eventually birthed her body into her art, expanding her Chicken Woman persona, and morphing into 15 “OTHER” identities. Montano holds an MA and MFA in sculpture and began using video in the 1970s. Attempting to obliterate the distinction between art and life, Montano's artwork is starkly autobiographical and often concerned with personal and spiritual discipline. She spent two years in a convent and studied Yoga and Zen. In 1983, Montano and artist Tehching Hsieh were literally tied together for one year in a living performance. Enduring publicly, as art, Montano transforms trauma into transfiguration.
